Anti-bullshit talk – Sterling

I have a friend that defines coolness as “the ability to identify and acquire cool things.”  I think this is a great joke because of the recursive, absolutely ungrounded meaningless–and apparent truth–of it. Bruce Sterling delivers a very nice anti-bullshit talk exposing posing (as in, what posers do), Facebook friends and coolness as empty.  He also takes a useful whack at materialism, both debunking the ideal of pretending we aren’t material and also our endless attempts to derive meaning from having.

Reboot presentation.

I think he comes across really cynical and bitter at first but his advice at the end is quite good – Keep only what you use and need, and if you do use it make sure it’s the best that you can get.
